Strathearn Harriers - New Year's Day Run 2014

Grampian Mountain Challenge

Race Date: 11 October 2025

Billed as 'Scotland’s Friendly Sociable Mountain Marathon', the Grampian Mountain Challenge is a cross between an orienteering event and a mountain marathon, raced over two days and with the relative luxury of overnight kit being transported to the overnight campsite.

This from Ali Cunningham: This mountain marathon is organised by the Grampian orienteering club and each day involved an orienteering section and a hill section. Fran Loots and Rachel Gallagher ran as a pair on the C course and myself, Ruth Clark and Alison Ritchie ran as a trio on the B. The terrain was completely brutal with deep heather and peat hags and there was little opportunity to actually run. We covered 32km with 1300m climb on the B course and were delighted to take only 7 hours! The C was not much shorter and all 5 of us were pretty broken by mid camp and all opted to drop down a class today - 6 more hours of heavy heather torture! But it was a brilliant sociable weekend with superb weather and a mid camp with shelter and food…and tent and kit transfer!
