The Highland Fling Race

The Highland Fling Race, is a demanding point-to-point 53-mile (85 km) trail ultramarathon along the southern section of the West Highland Way, from Milngavie to Tyndrum, with around 2,300m of ascent. Josie Goodfellow and Marcus Scotney were out representing our club. Unfortunately, for both, the checkpoint at Beinglas farm was their nemesis. For Marcus, as he describes it came apart after Beinglas. Vomiting first (I haven't been sick in an ultra since 2012), then some proper cramp, so the last 12 miles were a grind rather than a race. Rounded off with a spectacular Scotney fall two miles from the finish. He finished in 8:05:32 for 7th overall, and 1st in category. Josie, alas, was timed out at checkpoint 5, around 41 miles in, in a time around 11 hours 28 minutes. Particularly sad was the rudeness of a walker refusing to let Josie pass whilst she was pushing on to make the time control.
The race was won by Rowan Boswood of Carnethy in 6.46.00, and the women's race was won by Rachel Normand, also of Carnethy, in 8.34.31. There were 369 finishers and 58 DNFs.
