The Glenmore 24 backyard ultra is one of those mad 24 hour races in which runners run as many laps of a long loop - 4 miles - and a short lap - 400m - in the space of 24 hours.
Many thanks to Mags Gough for the following race report: Nick Gough took part in the Glenmore 24 trail race this weekend. A 24 hour race running around a 4 mile loop in the Glenmore forest. Starting at 12pm and running all through the night until 12pm on Sunday. With runners having free rein when to rest and when to go.
Nick set off at a steady, but strong pace and notched 15 laps in the first 12 hours, and at this point, smashing his distance PB and leaving 12 hours to complete the covered 100 miles (25 laps!).
For 18-22 laps Nick was in the leading six with all players swapping the lead over with good laps and tricky laps all happening throughout the night. A hard few laps at the beginning of Sunday, with rain and wind intermittently swapping with midgies meant a leader took an extra lap from EVERYONE.
Nick battled on and completed 100 miles by 10.40. A small rest and some 'gentle' encouragement from myself and his brother-in-law got Nick moving again to join on with the small laps (400m) which opened at 11am. 10 little laps later and Nick was allowed to stop with 102 miles on the clock!
Final results saw Nick in 9th overall (4th man) out of a field of 100+
A seriously impressive day out and despite the rain and only 40 mins sleep, a very enjoyable 24 hours for me too!!
